There are many different types of charging in terms of speed, connector types and modes. We have broken it down for you and compared each type to help you understand to uses and benefits of each one.
EV Charging Speeds
Slow EV Charging
Recommended use: Emergency charging at home or work
Time: 100% in 6-12 hours*
Fast EV Charging
Recommended use: Overnight or top-up charging at home or work
Time: 100% 2-6 hours*
Superfast EV Charging
Recommended use: Overnight or top-up charging at home or work
Time: 100% 2-6 hours*
Rapid EV Charging
Recommended use: High power charging for on the go
Time: 80% 20-30 minutes*
*Speed dependant on the make, model and battery size of the vehicle.
Connector types
UK three pin connector
A standard UK domestic plug. It can be used to charge some EV vehicles but lacks safety and speed.
Type 1
A five-pin plug that is most commonly used on earlier international EV/PHEV’s.
Type 2
A seven-pin plug typically found on most EV/PHEV vehicles on the market as manufactures move towards a European standard.
CSS (combo)
Used for rapid charging points and is usually compatible with European vehicles.
CHAdeME (JEVS)
Used for rapid charging points and is usually compatible with Asian vehicles.
Modes
Mode 1
- Most simple solution for EV charging
- Only requires a domestic socket and simple cable
- It can be dangerous if used incorrectly
- Recommended to only be used with small vehicles and bikes
Mode 2
- Can also be connected a domestic socket but is much safer
- Cable includes a built-in protection and charge monitoring device, meaning it will stop charging when the vehicle battery is full
Mode 3
- Vehicle is connected via a dedicated EV standard socket (type 1 or 2) or tethered cable
- A control and protection function is installed in the charging unit.
- The only charging mode that meets the applicable standards regulating electrical installations
Mode 4
- DC or AC connection for rapid recharging
- Uses either JEVS (CHAdeMO) or CCS (Combo) connectors on a tethered cable, with control and protection functions installed in the charging unit.
EV charging speed comparisons
*Speed dependant on the make, model and battery size of the vehicle.
