How to keep your commercial heating system in top shape this upcoming winter

Keeping boiler warm in the winter

Winter is the most important time of the year to make sure your plant room is in working order. With the days getting colder and colder, issues with your heating could have major impact on employee morale and could cause unnecessary interruptions to your business. Therefore, performing regular maintenance and checks on your boiler and heating system is essential for pro-longing its service life and preventing costly breakdowns when you need your heating the most.

Below we have put together all the pro-active things you could do to help prevent your commercial building from going cold this winter…

Has your boiler been serviced?

You should have your commercial boiler serviced every year – even if it seems to be in good working condition. This is because a qualified engineer will be able to spot potential issues with your boiler before they get even worse and lead to a breakdown. They can check that the boiler is working efficiently to prevent fuel wastage and make sure you are getting the most out of your money. It also helps to protect you and your employees against potential gas leaks that can be very harmful to humans.

Not only is a boiler service beneficial to you and your business – but it is also a legal requirement for commercial buildings to have a gas safety certificate for annual servicing.

Check for any cracks and leaking pipes

In colder weather it is common for the water in pipes to freeze and thaw, potentially causing cracks to develop in the pipework. If cracks are not resolved, this can lead to leaks developing and causing water damage to the surrounding areas. So be vigilant this winter and check for leaks.

Look out for draughts

Cracks in windows and doors can be one of the main causes of heat loss within your commercial building. If too much heat is being lost this way, this can cause major strain on your heating system.

Keep an eye on your boiler pressure

The pressure of your boiler is a great way of letting you know that there may be issues with your boiler. If the pressure is too high, it could mean that there are potential issues with the expansion vessels. If there is low pressure in the boiler, it could mean that the pressurisation unit is not working or the system has leaks.

Keep your heating system wrapped up this winter.

If pipework for a hot water system is not properly insulated, heat can escape from the pipe. This can result in more energy being used to heat the system than needed and could potentially cause your energy bills to rise. Uninsulated pipes are also at more risk of freezing.

Time for an upgrade?

If you notice frequent problems occurring with your boiler, especially if it is an old system, it may be time for an upgrade. Boilers are designed to last around 15-20 years and most become less efficient over time. We suggest that if a boiler is 15 years or older, it would be a good time to invest in a newer model as this helps reduce the risks of future costly breakdowns.
